‘This is crazy,’ said Will Smith as he plunged into the 108 meters high Batoka Gorges set against the backdrop of Victoria Falls, free falling towards the mighty Zambezi River into ‘no man’s land,’ between Zambia and Zimbabwe.
This must be the ultimate adrenaline rush, as you leap into space, free as a bird, saved from the swirling water below by the rebound of the cord, then hurtled upwards again at great speed. It’s an indescribable feeling that will probably change your life! The ‘Suicide Squad’ star had finally crossed something off his bucket list.
The action star filmed the entire experience as he jumped off one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, Victoria Falls. Stretching 1.7 kilometres wide and shared by the countries of Zambia and Zimbabwe, the falls are formed as the full width of the Zambezi River plummets into a 108 metre high cleft. During the wet season, the spray from the falls can be seen nearly 50 kilometres away, hence the local name Mosi-oa-Tunya (the ‘Smoke that Thunders’). “Bungee jump Victoria Falls. I’ve been wanting to do this for almost like 20 years,” said Smith as he is hung upside down after the jump.
The falls drop into a deep, narrow chasm, which is connected to a long series of gorges. This unique form allows the falls to be viewed face-on 60 metres away from the opposite side of the gorge.
In Southern Africa, the Zambezi River flows across a flat plateau that extends hundreds of kilometres in all directions. Still in really high spirits and the adrenaline still kicking he yelled out ‘Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,’ to the people above him, concluding saying: ‘That was fantastic.’
No booking is necessary, just take a stroll down to the bridge. You’ll have to go through the border post as the bridge is in no-mans-land, between Zambia and Zimababwe.
Just tell the guards you’re going to bungee jump and they’ll let you through without the normal exit procedure.
