Travel Writer Leda Knowlden explores the Lead Hotel’s suite elegance

Nestled atop the hills of Freetown in Sierra Leone is the Lead Hotel, an enchanting escape into the tropics of West Africa.

The sun rises and I awaken to a savoring breakfast with a view of the beautifully manicured and floral landscape in the stillness of morning. Thoughts of the day ahead promises lingering Lumley Beach’s boardwalk, shopping and exploring the hills of this picturesque city.

The hotel itself is a striking contrast of modern design and natural beauty. Stark white walls rise boldly against the skyline, their clean lines softened by cascades of pink bougainvillea that spill over balconies and frame doorways.

The staircase feels like a hideaway amidst lush greenery and brightly colored bougainvillea.

The vibrant flowers seem to dance in the gentle breeze, adding a splash of color that perfectly complements the minimalist architecture.

The living room of my suite is a sanctuary of comfort and style.

Inside the living room, sofas invite relaxation, while large windows allow the natural light to flood in, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The space is adorned with carefully chosen artwork and decor that reflect the local culture, offering a sense of place that is both sophisticated and homey.

The pool was probably my favorite spot at the Lead, giving me the space to unwind and chill.

As the day unfolds, I find myself drawn to the hotel’s pool, a serene oasis where the only sounds are the gentle ripple of water and the soft rustling of leaves. With a glass of wine in hand, I settle poolside, the cares of the world slipping away as I take in the view. The river, dotted with colorful canoes, winds its way through Freetown’s hilly landscape, a picturesque scene that feels almost like a painting.

The Lead Hotel is perfectly positioned for exploring Freetown, and a stroll down to Lumley Beach’s boardwalk offers a delightful day of local flavor and seaside relaxation. The beach is a vibrant stretch of golden sand where locals and visitors alike gather to unwind. Here, I spent the day lounging under the sun, watching impromptu football games with enthusiastic crowds, and soaking in the lively atmosphere. After the beach, I ventured into Freetown’s bustling shopping scene, discovering locally made fashion and charming home accents that capture the essence of Sierra Leonean craftsmanship. The vibrant colors and unique designs made for a perfect souvenir hunt, rounding off a day filled with cultural immersion and relaxation.

Dinner at the Lead Hotel is nothing short of a culinary journey. The restaurant offers a menu that celebrates the rich flavors of Sierra Leone, with dishes crafted from the freshest local ingredients. Each bite is a revelation, a perfect blend of tradition and innovation that leaves a lasting impression.

The Lead Hotel is more than just a place to stay; it is an experience, a retreat where luxury meets the natural beauty of Freetown.
