RABAT – Morocco is set to invest 6.1 billion dirhams ($580 million) by 2026 to enhance its tourism sector, aiming to attract more visitors and boost foreign currency inflows, the government announced on Friday.
The ambitious plan includes increased spending on marketing, the development of diverse tourist attractions, upgrading existing hotels, constructing new ones, and training more individuals to work in the tourism sector, according to the prime minister’s office.
The goal is to attract 17.5 million tourists by 2026, a significant increase from the 11 million visitors last year. For comparison, Morocco welcomed 13 million tourists in 2019.
This initiative is expected to create 200,000 new jobs in the tourism sector over the next four years, bolstering employment and economic growth.
The sector’s revenue more than doubled last year compared to 2021, reaching 91 billion dirhams and surpassing the levels seen in 2019.
